Jose Rivas

Director General of the INL



José Rivas is Full Professor of Physics at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Spain and Director General of the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL).

Since his PhD studies at Valladolid University, José Rivas has been dedicated to the research and development of magnetic materials. During his postdoctoral stage (1974-75) at the Max-Planck-Institute (Stuttgart, Germany), he focused on the preparation and magnetic properties of magnetic ceramics (ferrites), which are basic materials for electric and electronic devices. Working in various labs at the Universities of Valladolid, Burgos and Murcia, he continued experimental works on these complex oxides and created an active Magnetism Group in Spain

He became Full Professor in Physics in 1982, at the University of Santiago de Compostela. In 1986, he started with an interdisciplinary team of researchers of this university a new research stage related to the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured magnetic materials. As a result of these Investigations, they founded an interdisciplinary Nanotechnology and Magnetism laboratory, where several original methods for the preparation of magnetic nanoparticles have been developed and patented in America and Europe. Recently this laboratory created a high technology Spin-Off Company called NANOGAP, of which José Rivas is co-founder. The Spanish Ministry of Industry awarded a National innovation prize to NANOGAP for having a wide range of quality particles.

José Rivas is the author of several book chapters, five patents and more than three hundred scientific articles. He has received several awards and distinctions and plays an active role in Nanosciences outreach, promoting interdisciplinary schools and conferences and taking part in future European Nanotechnology strategy definition as a Member of several European committees, such as the COST NanoSTAG Committee or the Steering Commitee of the European Science Foundation's Forward Look on Nanomedicine.
